Residents prototyping in Bolderaja Library Garden

On May 29 a new circular cultural space will open in Bolderāja Library. Two outdoor reading areas, a multifunctional structure serving as a stage, activity space and storage area, as well as seating for 50 visitors, have been created on the library grounds.

The new library garden was developed in collaboration with local residents and implemented in accordance with the principles of the circular economy and the New European Bauhaus, combining aesthetics, sustainability and inclusivity. The landscaping incorporates reused materials as well as durable and multifunctional solutions that harmoniously blend into the surrounding environment and promote resource-conscious use.

Following reconstruction, the Bolderāja Library reopened in the summer of 2024 with the goal of becoming a local neighborhood center for cultural, educational, and social activities. The creation of the library garden has become a special part of the project, demonstrating how public outdoor space can simultaneously be functional, aesthetically pleasing, and environmentally friendly.

Local community involvement played an important role in the development of the project. Before the garden concept was designed, residents were invited to share their ideas and needs regarding the desired improvements to the area. In the autumn of 2025, the landscaping developers, SIA "Tandeems Cycle", worked together with residents to improve prototypes of individual elements in order to practically test and refine the proposed solutions.

As a result of the collaboration between residents and professionals, the people of Bolderāja and all of Riga have gained a new cultural space that also serves as a reminder of the importance of careful, long-term, and repeated use of household items, textiles, and construction materials.

The opening celebration of the cultural space will feature creative workshops and an original concert by Lauma Kazaka. The opening event will be attended by Riga Mayor Viesturs Kleinbergs, as well as individuals involved in the creation of the circular garden.
